Volcano Island, is one of the greatest attractions of Santorini, whose former intense activity (last reported eruption in 1950s) gave the island its current shape and morphology. Before the several eruptions that occured throughout the centuries, the shape and the size of Santorini was much different. It used to be a round single island (the first name of Santorini was Strogili that means “round”) which gradually reached its present form. At present the volcano is underwater and still active. However, Nea Kameni is the island that the locals call Volcano.
