Volcano Island

Volcano Island, is one of the greatest attractions of Santorini, whose former intense activity (last reported eruption in 1950s) gave the island its current shape and morphology. Before the several eruptions that occured throughout the centuries, the shape and the size of Santorini was much different. It used to be a round single island (the first name of Santorini was Strogili that means “round”) which gradually reached its present form. Nowadays, Santorini is consisted of the mainland, Thirasia Island, an uninhabited island named Aspronisi and the two volcanic islets Palaia and Nea Kameni. At present the volcano is underwater and still active. However, Nea Kameni is the island that the locals call Volcano. You can walk on it, embrace the volcanic vibes, touch the lava stones and admire the active crater. Palaia Kameni hosts the famous natural spa Hot Springs. The water there consists of sulphur, mud and other minerals, which makes the Hot Springs ideal for a therapeutic and beneficial swim.If you wish to visit this landscape you can choose a santorini catamaran cruise or a boat tour, which are organized daily.
