Megalochori

Megalochori, although not considered one of the top choices for anyone visiting when in Santorini, it quickly becomes one of the most beloved destinations when there. Megalochori is located in the mainland of the island. It doesn’t offer the breathtaking caldera view but it generously gives you a taste of tradition and myth. It has a few Greek traditional taverns, coffee shops, galleries and historical mansions. It is also the perfect place to taste the well known and unique sweet Santorinian wine ”Vinsanto’’, a wine to which the pirates appeared to have a soft spot for. It is said that during the 17th century, merchants of Megalochori were great exporters of Vinsanto and were often victims of piracy, something that you can understand from the construction of high walls and heavy wooden entrance doors also justifying the imposing buildings of the village and the wineries that are still maintained until nowadays.
